Can I Wear Clear Aligners?

While effective, metal braces can be uncomfortable and impact your professional appearance. In addition, treatment can take a up to two and a half years in some cases. However, for adults and teens we’re proud to offer an alternative: Invisalign. Can anyone wear clear aligners? What do we look for when assessing candidacy?

Who Qualifies?

We look at a number of factors when deciding if this is the best route to a straighter smile. For example, we will look at the cause and severity of your misalignment. You may be surprised to learn we can often correct smiles for patients of all ages, including adults, teens, and children as young as age seven.

How Does the Treatment Work?

If we decide you’re a candidate for Invisalign we will take detailed impressions and photographs of your teeth. This information will be used at an Invisalign lab to create a series of custom aligners. You will then wear the aligners every day between 20 and 23 hours. About every two weeks you will move on to the next set of aligners as your teeth are gently repositioned.

You can remove them before brushing and flossing your teeth, allowing you to care for them more easily than if you were wearing metal braces. You can also remove them prior to meals, which means you won’t have to avoid certain foods during treatment. Finally, they can be taken out for special occasions, such as graduations or celebrations. However, make sure you’re still wearing them for the minimum amount of time the doctor recommends.

How Long Will I Wear Them?

That will depend on a number of factors, including your age and the severity of your misalignment. However, on average adults wear them for about a year and teens for about 18 months. If you have any questions about clear aligners then contact our office today.
